Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh felicitates World Cup Winner Cricketer Uma Chetry; calls for ACA Stand in her name and State Honour

Bokakhat, Golaghat | November 9, 2025:
In a heartwarming civic reception organized by the Golaghat District Administration and the Bokakhat Co-District Sports Association on Saturday at the Bokakhat Stadium the home ground of World Cup-winning cricketer Uma Chetry – the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) felicitated the pride of Assam and the Northeast on behalf of the 10.5 Millions Gorkhas of India.

Speaking to media persons during the ceremony, Nanda Kirati Dewan, General Secretary of the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh, Assam, hailed Uma Chetry’s achievement as a historic milestone for the state and the community. He requested the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) to commemorate Uma’s contribution to Indian cricket by naming the bowling and wicketkeeping end at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati as the “Uma Chetry International Stand.” Dewan remarked that such an honour would “inspire the next generation of cricketers and sportspersons while etching her name permanently in the history of Assam cricket.”

Dewan also appealed to the Government of Assam to appoint Uma Chetry as Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports) or Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the Assam Police, in line with the State Sports Policy, which provides for such recognition to international achievers.

He further emphasized that the state government should reward Uma Chetry on par with other international cricketers of India, acknowledging her extraordinary feat as the first woman cricketer from Assam and the entire Northeast to be part of the ICC Women’s World Cup champion team. “Uma Chetry’s journey from Bokakhat to the world stage is a testament to Assam’s sporting potential and the power of determination. She deserves every honour that the state can bestow,” Dewan added.

The event witnessed an overwhelming turnout of district officials, sports enthusiasts, students, and well-wishers who gathered to celebrate Assam’s cricketing icon. Cabinet Minister and Bokakhat MLA Atul Bora, Kaziranga Lok Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, District Commissioner Pulak Mahanta, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajen Singh (IPS), Bokakhat Co-District Commissioner, CDSP, and over 220 socio political educational religious community and sports organizational leaders were present at the civic reception to honour Uma Chetry.

Uma’s parents and three brothers were also felicitated by the district administration.

Earlier in the day, Uma received a hero’s welcome at her home ground. She was brought from her Kandulimari residence to Bokakhat Stadium in a decorated open jeep rallying with hundreds of motorcycles for nearly 22 kilometres. Along the route and at the stadium entrance, college and school students, along with young athletes from various sports academies, lined up and showered flowers on Uma as she walked the red carpet to the felicitation stage a truly emotional and proud moment for Assam.
